There are some pretty incredible wedding venues in San Juan for both indoor and outdoor celebrations.
You can exchange vows surrounded by centuries-old architecture, celebrate beneath the Puerto Rico sunshine, or have your reception in a beautiful ballroom.
With so many breathtaking options, deciding between an indoor and outdoor wedding can feel a little overwhelming. But I don’t necessarily think you have to choose.

After photographing celebrations at some of the most stunning wedding venues San Juan offers, I’ve seen how those that give couples access to both indoor and outdoor areas, or at least offer covered spaces that provide some protection from the sun and rain, make a big difference on a wedding day.
Before deciding which San Juan wedding venue feels right for you, here’s what I recommend thinking about.
Puerto Rico’s warm weather is part of what makes getting married here so beautiful. But it’s important to plan for the reality of a tropical climate, too.
San Juan is warm and humid, and rain is always a possibility.
That doesn’t mean you should abandon the outdoor ceremony you’ve been picturing. It simply means your venue should give you options.
Think about the time of year you’re getting married and when you’ll spend the most time outside.

A ceremony later in the day can feel very different from spending hours outdoors during the strongest afternoon sun.
Even when the weather is beautiful, having a covered terrace or another shaded area gives you and your guests somewhere to escape the direct sun during without heading completely indoors.
When you’re comparing wedding venues in San Juan, don’t only ask what happens if it rains. Ask what options you’ll have if it’s a gorgeous day but much hotter than expected.
There’s a reason so many couples picture getting married outdoors in Puerto Rico.
San Juan offers historic architecture, tropical scenery, ocean views, and beautiful outdoor spaces. These surroundings can help shape your entire day rather than simply being the backdrop.

You don’t need to avoid an outdoor venue because you’re worried about the weather. When comparing wedding venues in San Juan, I suggest simply looking at what else the property offers.
The ideal venue for a San Juan wedding should have shade nearby, somewhere you can move under cover if a quick shower passes through, and a space that’s comfortable for guests to wait before the ceremony begins, without enduring extreme heat.
I’ve seen how much more relaxed bridal couples are when they know their outdoor venue offers another option if needed.
Even if you’re set on an outdoor ceremony, I strongly recommend having access to an air-conditioned space at some point during the day.
Puerto Rico can get very hot and humid.
If you sweat easily or become overstimulated when you’re hot, spending hours outside in wedding attire may start feeling uncomfortable much sooner than you expect.
Having an air-conditioned reception gives everyone a chance to cool down after the ceremony and portraits.
Even a smaller indoor area you can retreat to between different parts of the day can help.

Your guests may appreciate it just as much.
Not everyone handles heat in the same way. Comfort is worth considering when you’re inviting people to spend several hours celebrating with you.
Choosing an indoor space doesn’t mean giving up the Puerto Rico wedding experience you imagined.
Sometimes it simply gives you somewhere comfortable to enjoy the next part of it.
You don’t necessarily need a venue that’s strictly indoors or outdoors.
In fact, some of the best wedding venues in San Juan give you access to both.
You might exchange vows outside, enjoy cocktail hour on a covered terrace, and then head into air conditioning for dinner and dancing.
Another venue might have an open-air courtyard with an indoor space ready if the weather changes.
San Juan wedding venues that offer both outdoor and indoor spaces also give you a built-in rain plan.
Afternoon showers can happen suddenly in Puerto Rico, and knowing your celebration doesn’t depend entirely on the forecast takes away a lot of unnecessary stress.
If you love the feeling of an outdoor celebration, a terrace or covered courtyard can protect you from direct sun and passing rain without making the wedding feel completely indoors.

When touring Puerto Rico wedding venues in San Juan, ask to see all the spaces available to you, not only the one you’re initially interested in.
You may be surprised by how much having options changes the way you picture your day.
When you walk into a venue you love, it’s easy to immediately picture yourself exchanging vows there.
But your ceremony is only one part of the wedding day.
While you’re touring San Juan wedding venues, think about where you’ll be while getting ready, taking family photographs, spending time with your partner, and waiting for the reception to begin.
This becomes especially important if you know you get hot or overstimulated easily. Having little pockets of comfort built into your day can make a noticeable difference.
They don’t necessarily have to be at your venue, either.

If you’re taking portraits at different spots around San Juan, even an Uber with the AC cranked between locations can give you a much-needed break from the heat.
Your photography is another reason to consider the entire property when touring wedding venues in San Juan.
Choosing an indoor reception doesn’t mean giving up beautiful outdoor portraits. Likewise, an outdoor ceremony doesn’t mean you need to spend your entire wedding day outside.
Having access to different spaces gives your photographer more options while allowing you to enjoy San Juan without spending hours in the heat just for photographs.

If having both indoor and outdoor options sounds right for you, there are several San Juan wedding venues I recommend exploring.
Rather than choosing a venue based only on how beautiful the ceremony space looks online, pay attention to what the entire property offers when you’re there.
The places below are good examples of venues that can offer flexibility while still allowing San Juan to be part of the celebration.
Dating back to 1646, Hotel El Convento brings historic Old San Juan character into every part of a wedding day.
You can celebrate in open-air spaces before moving indoors for an air-conditioned reception, with Old San Juan’s colorful streets nearby for portraits.
Among wedding venues in San Juan, it’s a beautiful choice if you want history and flexibility in one location.
Condado Vanderbilt Hotel is a great example of how you can enjoy San Juan’s oceanfront setting without committing your entire celebration to the outdoors.
You can exchange vows overlooking the Atlantic before moving inside to one of the hotel’s elegant reception spaces.
With ocean views continuing through several indoor spaces, you don’t have to sacrifice the scenery for air-conditioned comfort.
Antiguo Casino de Puerto Rico will feel made for you if you’re drawn to classic elegance.
Its grand white façade and terrace create a beautiful setting for an outdoor ceremony, while the marble floors, ornate details, and chandeliers bring the celebration indoors.
It’s a particularly strong choice for a wedding venue in San Juan when you want indoor and outdoor spaces that feel equally grand.
You don’t have to choose between enjoying Puerto Rico’s beautiful outdoors and being comfortable on your wedding day.

For some couples, the perfect combination will be an outdoor ceremony followed by an air-conditioned reception. For others, a covered celebration with opportunities to head outside for photographs will make more sense.
Think about what will make you and your guests comfortable enough to actually enjoy the day rather than choosing based solely on what looks beautiful in photographs.
Over the years, I’ve photographed weddings in all kinds of Puerto Rico settings, and every celebration uses a venue differently.
The best choice is one that gives you the option to experience the day the way you want to, while still creating plenty of opportunities for beautiful photographs along the way.
